Nature reclaims its rights, and color will emerge from the bitumen...a seed of hope✨"

Description
An account of the resource
This large mural of Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg appears on the side of a building in Bristol, England. It was painted in May, 2019 for Upfest, Europe's largest street art festival. Thunberg had received worldwide notoriety for her climate activism, including solo strikes that sparked the global youth #FridaysForFuture movement. In keeping with the ecologically responsible message of the piece, the artist explained on his Instagram that "65-70% of the wall was painted with water based paint with an electric spray gun powered by the Tobacco Factories solar cells. I used a minimum of conventional spray paint - around 25 full cans I’ve counted as this was a big consideration given the theme of the wall."

Description
An account of the resource

Spanish artist Isaac Cordel's Cement Eclipses installations have appeared in urban settings around the world since the mid-2000s. As explained by art historian Peter Bengsten (2018), Cordel strategically places "small sculptures of human beings – often balding, briefcase-carrying, white men in suits – that are either painted in drab colours or are left in the grey tones of the raw material they are made from" so that passersby will happen upon them. As in this example, these miniature figures are sometimes juxtaposed alongside natural elements in the otherwise built setting, typically in poignant ways that highlight the contrast and conflict between industrialized living and non-human nature. Bengstrom (2018) explains, “Given the attire of the sculptures, which brings to mind that of archetypical bureaucrats, businessmen or politicians, Cordal’s installations can be interpreted as critical comments on the unsustainable, growth-based capitalist society which currently dominates the world economy. The artist’s work can be seen as a call for people to re-assess their anthropocentric values…” (p. 128).

Description
An account of the resource
Using eco acrylic and compostable film the artist has painted an image of a polar bear, suspended between signposts. The monochromatic bear simultaneously blends with and stands in stark contrast to the grey bricks, steel guardrail, and other colorless features of the urban setting. This image is one of a series of wildlife paintings Albano has created on compostable film in urban settings. In this photograph, the artist stands proudly next to his work.

A Coruña, Spain
Description
An account of the resource
In this colorful and complex mural, an adult whale and baby whale are trapped in a gigantic water bottle. Curious onlookers take photos with their phones while uniformed officials appear to control the crowd. Meanwhile, a scientist in a white lab coat speaks to one of several industrial workers clad in construction helmets near a large pipeline coming from the bottle's spout. The public and industry workers are separated by a giant set of plastic can rings stretched across a small stream. Other than the stream, all water in this arid landscape is contained in the enormous bottle. The artist explained in his Instagram post that the work addresses "the rate of excessive consumption of natural resources and pollution with waste, specifically water as one of the most precious goods. A possible future scenario if we do not begin to correctly manage our passage through the planet. We must be able to guarantee the supply of water to future generations."

Description
An account of the resource
In a mural on the side of a building, an enormous sparrow perches on a sagging chainlink fence while holding a plastic drinking straw in its beak. The caption reads "IT'S OH SO QUIET." As explained in the artist's own December 16, 2019 Instagram post of the piece, this ordinary songbird is "endangered with rapidly decreasing numbers! They are suffering from habitat loss due to overpopulating cities and a lack of food due to; pesticides and herbicides being used on the crops in the countryside which feeds an over populated country... im sure that when the last bird is no longer around to be heard anymore, we can start to vote in governments that give a shit about the environment and the fragile state of its biodiversity."
